n the heart of Florence, one of BUNKER Studio’s earliest projects takes shape. An apartment where grey becomes the neutral backdrop for a home designed around the personality of its owner, while touches of red, recurring throughout the interiors, bring energy and character. Two defining colours, bespoke furnishings, vintage pieces and a site-specific mural transform this Florentine residence into a space rich in identity. For the homeowner, plants represent a family emblem: his family owns a historic paper mill. The apartment is filled with personal references, collected objects and contemporary artworks that coexist with vintage pieces and iconic design furniture.

Founded on a design approach rooted in dialogue with the client, BUNKER Studio developed the project around the idea of creating a timeless architectural canvas. Walls, ceilings, window frames, shutters, radiators, skirting boards and even electrical plates were all finished in the same shade of grey, allowing artworks, objects and carefully placed colour accents to take centre stage. The vibrant Florentine red, appearing throughout the apartment, creates continuity while introducing moments of contrast.

For this project, BUNKER Studio collaborated with architect Cristina Romiti’s practice, completely reconfiguring the original layout to create an open-plan living area of approximately seventy square metres. The contribution of local Tuscan craftsmen was equally essential, producing all of the bespoke furniture and even the oak parquet flooring, made from the same timber used for the custom bookcases. The stainless-steel kitchen was specified with a pre-aged finish, chosen to develop character naturally through everyday use.

The interiors are completed with a selection of celebrated design pieces, including Gio Ponti’s Superleggera chair, Franco Albini’s Margherita armchair, and several objects sourced from Nero Design Gallery in Arezzo, renowned for its collection of modern design and contemporary art.
