In the historic centre of Castelfranco di Sopra, a small medieval village between Florence and Arezzo, the Il Ristoro project was conceived to reinterpret a long-standing family business through a contemporary and highly distinctive design language. The intervention transforms the spaces of a butcher’s shop operating since the eighteenth century into a restaurant that conveys the memory of the place without resorting to the traditional aesthetic of the Tuscan trattoria.

The design takes shape from a simple yet radical idea: to establish a dialogue between two distant moments in history, the late eighteenth century and the present. This contrast gives rise to an immersive and theatrical environment, where the existing architectural heritage coexists with contemporary elements of strong visual impact.

The entire space is built around a palette dominated by shades of red, a direct reference to the raw material that has defined the identity of the butcher’s shop for generations. Carmine-red resin floors, theatrical curtains, diffused lighting, and reflective surfaces transform the interiors into a sequence of almost cinematic spaces. The atmosphere evokes the worlds of theatre and contemporary clubs, while maintaining a strong connection to the historic context in which it is set.

Materials become narrative devices. The Carrara and Bardiglio marble flooring recalls traditional Tuscan butcher shops, while the satin-finished steel wall panelling evokes the blades of butcher’s knives and the cold-storage rooms of the original business. A luminous grid designed across the ceiling references the Roman centuriation that shaped the urban layout of the village, introducing an additional layer of interpretation connected to the history of the territory.

More than a simple renovation, the project represents a cultural exploration of the concept of tradition. Rather than reproducing established aesthetic codes, it reinterprets local history through a contemporary language, demonstrating how even a small town can become the setting for ambitious design research.

The furnishings, almost entirely custom-designed, contribute to creating a coherent and distinctive identity. Tables clad in the iconic laminate from the Quaderna series, restored and reinterpreted vintage seating, red banquettes, and metallic details coexist within a space that constantly shifts between memory and experimentation. Every element is conceived to enhance the immersive nature of the experience, transforming the act of dining into a collective event.

The result is a space with a strong and distinctive identity, designed to surprise and engage, where the legacy of a historic family business is transformed into a new architectural narrative built around memory, conviviality, and the ability of design to create new forms of experience.
